Meeting Amy Taylor-Kabbaz: A Powerful Voice for Mothers
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Amy Taylor-Kabbaz, and I walked away deeply inspired by the transformative work she has done for mothers around the world. With a rich background in journalism, research, and advocacy, Amy has dedicated her career to a subject that often gets overlooked: the profound transformation women experience when they become mothers.
Understanding Motherhood Beyond the Surface
Rather than viewing motherhood simply as a life stage, Amy approaches it as a multifaceted psychological, biological, social, and cultural shift. Her insights challenge the conventional narratives that often marginalise mothers' experiences, giving them the attention and respect they deserve.
What struck me most was Amy's commitment to moving this conversation beyond theory and into actionable change. She has spent years supporting mothers on an individual basis, building a vibrant community, training facilitators, and creating practical resources that empower women to understand what they are going through.
A Compassionate Approach to Training
One of the standout aspects of Amy’s work is her impressive training programme. Since 2019, she has developed a coaching certification in matrescence—the identity shift that occurs when women become mothers. Recognised by the International Coaching Federation, this training provides practitioners with a thorough understanding of the research, neuroscience, psychology, and lived experiences surrounding motherhood. Additionally, it equips them with the practical coaching skills necessary to support others in a trauma-informed manner.
Through her efforts, Amy has trained hundreds of facilitators across more than 35 countries. Her community comprises professionals from diverse fields, including coaches, midwives, doulas, and occupational therapists, all working to support mothers and families. She also hosts ongoing monthly calls and masterclasses, ensuring her network stays connected to the latest research and developments in motherhood.
Adapting to Diverse Needs
Amy’s flexibility in tailoring her training to meet the needs of various organisations is commendable. For example, she offers a shorter certification called Matrescence-informed Care, aimed at individuals already working with mothers. This programme focuses on the emotional aspects of supporting women through the transition into motherhood, allowing it to be adapted across different settings—be it healthcare, coaching, education, or community support.
Creating Real-World Change
What I admire most about Amy's work is its emphasis on real-world change rather than mere awareness. She is actively helping to shift the perception of mothers in workplaces, healthcare, and society at large. By recognising motherhood as a significant transformation rather than a problem to be fixed, she is building a future where mothers receive the support they need and deserve.
Amy is also part of a growing international network, collaborating with women and organisations in the UK, Australia, the Middle East, and beyond. Her global reach is complemented by a grounded and practical approach: train individuals effectively, share evidence-based insights, support mothers adequately, and continually push the narrative forward.
A Vision for the Future
Leaving our conversation, I felt excited about the possibilities that arise when we join forces in this important work. Amy Taylor-Kabbaz is not just changing the narrative for mothers; she is actively constructing the infrastructure that supports it. Her dedication and innovative approach offer hope for a future where motherhood is embraced as a powerful journey, full of potential and understanding.
In a world that often sidelines mothers, Amy is making sure their voices are heard loud and clear.
